Bharatanatyam is an ancient dance form nurtured in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Originating in the temples of southern India, this dance was performed as an artistic offering during worship. It was also patronized in the royal courts of kings where it developed a traditional repertoire of poetry and songs. It incorporated the element of Indian art and culture in its expression. The dance is named for Bharata, the sage-author of Natya Sastra, an ancient treatise on Dramaturgy dating from the 2nd – 5th century A.D.
Bharata Natyam has two distinct aspects, Nritta (dance movement) - stylized rhythmic movements with sculptural poses and Abhinaya (interpretative communication) - an elaborate use of hand gestures, body movements, and facial expressions to interpret the meaning of songs.
